Tamborine Mountain – ‘The Green behind the Gold’
Tamborine Mountain is a beautiful lush green mountain plateau in the Gold Coast Hinterland, only an hours’ drive from Brisbane or Surfers Paradise. It is home to the first ever National Park in Queensland and a secret hideaway for Australia’s city dwellers.
Tamborine Mountain
Tamborine Mountain is part of the famous Gold Coast Hinterland, south of Brisbane, in South Eeast Queensland, Australia. The plateau is about 560m high and measures 8 km long and 4 km wide. It has 3 small villages (North Tamborine, Eagle Heights and Mount Tamborine) with a total population of just under 7000.
The plateau originated from the Mount Warning volcanic eruption 22 million years ago and is part of the Scenic Rim Regional Shire. The plateau looks down on the surrounding lowlands, to the Gold Coast and Pacific Ocean to the east and all the way to the Great Dividing Range to the west. The Gold Coast view is breathtaking by day, but by night the panorama of lights is even more stunning.
Tamborine Mountain was the home of the Wangerriburra aborigines tens of thousands of years before white settlement. It was completely covered by subtropical rainforest, which was cleared at a rapid pace for agriculture and timber production after it was opened for selection in 1875. Fortunately in 1908 efforts were made to protect the natural beauty of the mountain and the very first National Park was created in Queensland – Witches Falls National Park. Over the years 12 separate sections with mainly remnant rainforest were added to the original National Park, almost encircling the plateau, and named ‘Tamborine National Park’. Most areas have well defined and easy to negotiate bush walking tracks right through the rainforest.
Tamborine Mountains Climate
Queensland is known as the Sunshine State of Australia. On Tamborine Mountain you can enjoy abundant sunshine with less heat and humidity that more northerly parts of Queensland sometimes have to endure. The climate is subtropical, with the annual rainfall of about 1600 mm falling mainly between December and March. Temperatures vary between max 18°C in winter and 28°C in summer, averaging some four or five degrees cooler than the surrounding lowlands. Because of this relatively large temperature difference in close proximity to the city, Tamborine Mountain proves to be a popular destination for city-dwellers, coming up the mountain in winter to celebrate Christmas in

A visit to Tamborine Mountain would not be complete without visiting the “Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves” at Cedar Creek Estate Vineyard.
Opened in 2004, tours are approximately half an hour and will take you on an enlightening journey to another world. Walk through the rainforest on our raised boardwalk and bridge over the starting place of pristine Cedar Creek to get to the caves. Our friendly water dragons will meet you at the entrance to our amazing Glow Worm Caves.
The caves consist of two large chambers interlinked by tunnels.
The first chamber is the “presentation cave”, where you will be shown an audiovisual display on glow-worms and the construction of the caves. This chamber is complete with very realistic formations (speleothems), such as stalagmites and stalactites, water features and flow stone.
From this stunning cave, you will be guided through the magical “glow-worm cave”, filled with thousands of glowing glow-worms!

Exploring the Rainforest Canopies….
Visitors depart from the Rainforest Eco Gallery and begin the adventure on a spectacular elevated walkway through the beautiful middle and upper canopies of the rainforest.
The walkway is a stable, high-tech steel structure enabling visitors to explore these canopies in a safe and secure way. It descends gradually to the lower canopy and follows points of interest including rockpools and waterfalls, a butterfly lookout, local history enclosure and sheltered rest areas along the way until reaching the amazing Cantilever.
This is a 40 metre long span soaring 30 metres above the valley, with spectacular views over the creek and the rainforest canopies below. Finally the walk returns along the rainforest floor to the Centre.
For those who venture onto the canopy walk, the adventure begins in the Rainforest Eco Gallery which has a comprehensive array of rainforest fauna and flora information and displays. These include interpretive panels with descriptions and photos of sub-tropical rainforest wildlife, static displays and an aquarium with a variety of Australian freshwater fish.
The “Birdwing Café” serves delicious light refreshments inside or on the deck beside the rainforest, also on offer an interesting gift and souvenir shop with quality merchandise.

Click on the yellow circle to find TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN DISTILLERY on the main map!
One of the most sought out destinations in the Scenic Rim is the “Tamborine Mountain Distillery”. This is Australia’s smallest operating Pot Still Distillery, but of world renown, and attracts visitors from Europe, America, Canada, New Zealand and Asia.
With the combination of rich red volcanic soils and fresh spring water, the abundant fruit of the mountain is fermented and distilled onsite. A small Pot Still is used to create the superb spirit which is the essence and foundation of Liqueurs, Schnapps, Vodka and Eaux de Vie.
Michael and Alla Ward have established an enviable reputation as creators of high quality liqueurs, vodkas, schnapps and eaux-de-vie. This reputation, largely developed by word of mouth, has seen people eagerly visiting from all over the world. The Distillery’s products have won numerous awards in America (Chicago, San Francisco) and Europe (London, Belgium, Germany, Austria) – it is, in fact, Australia’s most-awarded distillery and liquor brand.
The incredible range of fruit grown on Mt Tamborine is a wonderful resource. The Distillery also receives a considerable diversity of fruit from other growers which they turn into beautiful, smooth, Schnapps, Liqueurs, Fruit Brandy, Gins and Vodkas – all available from cellar door, and most are in beautiful, hand-painted bottles.
The Distillery has received national and international media coverage. A visit always includes the personal touch – Michael and Alla, or maybe one of the two younger Wards love relating to small groups in telling their story, and have deliberately made their driveway narrow to preclude busloads of people arriving en mass.
The Distillery is open Monday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
